How to Buy Postage Online in Canada and Print the Label

Yes—you can buy postage online in Canada and print the label at home. Canada Post’s three routes, what each costs, and what to do without a printer.

Short answer: yes—you can buy postage for a parcel online in Canada, pay by credit card and print the label yourself, with no queue at the counter. For personal shipping the tool is Canada Post’s Ship Online; businesses have their own tools, with lower prices. Which one fits depends on how often you ship, and that choice moves the price more than anything else.

Below are the three official routes, followed by the questions people actually search for: no printer, tracking, prepaid envelopes, letters and pickups. Figures come from Canada Post’s own pages as of October 2026. Rates and promotions change, so treat canadapost.ca as the source of truth.

Route 1: one parcel at a time with Ship Online

Ship Online is Canada Post’s personal shipping tool for sending a parcel anywhere in Canada, to the U.S. or internationally. You need a free Canada Post online account, and you pay by credit card (Visa, Mastercard or American Express). The flow is five steps: log in; enter where it is going plus the package weight and dimensions; pick a service; pay and print the label; drop the parcel off.

Measure before you start. Price depends on size as well as weight, and a box that turns out bigger than you declared is the classic way an online label goes wrong. The label prints on regular 8.5 × 11 in letter paper (the tool also offers a thermal-label format); print at 100% scale so the barcode scans.

One limit personal shippers hit quickly: Expedited Parcel—often the best-value domestic service—is only available to Solutions for Small Business members and customers with a Canada Post agreement. On a personal account the domestic choices are Regular Parcel, Xpresspost and Priority.

Route 2: a small business—free membership, then Snap Ship

If you ship for a business at all, even a side business, join Solutions for Small Business first. Membership is free (Canadian-resident businesses only), and it is what unlocks business pricing online. Savings are tiered by annual shipping spend—Level 1 at $0–$2,499, Level 2 at $2,500–$4,999, Level 3 at $5,000–$7,499 and Level 4 at $7,500 and up—reassessed every quarter on your previous 12 months.

Two numbers matter right now. Canada Post’s current small-business campaign lists savings of up to 38% on Expedited Parcel, 45% on Xpresspost, 42% on shipments to the U.S. and 58% on international, compared with counter prices (other Canada Post pages quote somewhat different maximums, so check the live table). And through December 31, 2026, every member automatically gets the program’s best rates, however little they ship. If you have been paying counter prices, this is the biggest saving available to you.

Members ship through Snap Ship, Canada Post’s free online shipping tool, aimed at businesses sending fewer than 50 packages a day. You can prepare and pay for up to 50 shipments in a single order, save recipients for reuse and pay with a major credit card (account billing is offered to some customers). Shipments created but not paid for expire after 7 days. One limit to know: you cannot import an existing address book—Snap Ship is built for keying in a manageable daily volume, not for uploading hundreds of orders.

Route 3: dozens a day—a contract and Canada Post’s volume tools

Past a certain volume Canada Post itself points you to a contract: its commercial pages say a volume-based agreement may suit you if you ship more than 1,250 parcels a year (elsewhere: more than 25 packages a week). Contract customers get two more tools. Shipping Manager is a free online tool aimed at 10–50 shipments a day, again up to 50 labels per order. EST Desktop 2.0 is the high-volume desktop software: it imports orders and address books from .txt, .csv or .xml files and batch-prints hundreds of orders at a time—but it requires a contract, and since August 29, 2025 it cannot create labels for U.S. destination addresses. Developers can also integrate through Canada Post’s web services, which have separate contract and non-contract shipping APIs.

These business tools print on 8.5 × 11 in sheets (laser printer) or 4 × 6 in thermal labels. Whatever the format, print at 100%: a scaled barcode can fail at acceptance.

When are you actually charged?

For small-business and commercial accounts, Canada Post moved to scan-based billing on July 2, 2025: your card is pre-authorized when you create the label, and payment is processed only once the item is physically scanned. A label you never use no longer needs a cancellation request.

For personal Ship Online labels the public pages are less explicit. Each label is single-use, so never photocopy or reuse one; if you bought a label you will not use, ask Canada Post customer service about a refund rather than letting it sit.

How much does a shipping label cost online?

There is no flat price. Every label is priced on service level, distance, weight and size—large, light boxes can be priced on their dimensions rather than their weight—plus options such as signature or extra coverage. Canada Post defines its consumer prices as the prices for customers who have counter staff weigh the item, calculate the price and affix the postage; its personal pages do not advertise a cheaper online price, and the published discounts are tied to Solutions for Small Business membership.

So the lever you control first is where the price comes from. Counter pricing is the most expensive baseline; Solutions for Small Business pricing is discounted against it; and a volume contract is negotiated on top. Choosing the right service tier and packing to actual size come next.

Which services include tracking

Domestically, Priority and Xpresspost include tracking, an on-time delivery guarantee and $100 of coverage. Regular Parcel has tracking but no delivery guarantee, and coverage costs extra. Expedited Parcel, as noted, is for business customers only.

To the U.S. and abroad: Tracked Packet – USA (up to 1 kg) includes tracking and $100 coverage; Tracked Packet – International (under 2 kg) is tracked but only goes to a limited list of countries; Small Packet has no tracking; and International Parcel can only be tracked for events within Canada. If a marketplace requires valid tracking, Small Packet is a false saving. For business shipments to the U.S., Canada Post has also required a Declaration ID to create a label since August 29, 2025.

No printer? Three ways round it

Ship Online: buy the label online, then show your emailed receipt on your phone at a post office and staff will print the label for you—not every post office offers this, so check before you go. Snap Ship (businesses): scan a QR code and print at a post office counter. Purolator: labels created in E-Ship Now can be printed from a QR code at a Purolator Shipping Centre.

Letters are different: stamps, not printed postage

Searching "buy postage online" for a letter? For personal mail, Canada Post sells stamps—online through its shop or at a post office—rather than print-at-home letter postage. Printing your own letter postage (postal indicia or a postage meter) is reserved for Solutions for Small Business members, Registered Mail is bought at a post office, and a letter over 500 g has to go as a parcel.

Prepaid envelopes and flat rate boxes

Canada Post also sells postage built into packaging. Flat rate boxes come in four sizes, currently priced from $18.99 to $32.99, each up to 5 kg; an overweight box will not be shipped, and no options can be added. Prepaid envelopes should be used within three years, and you can buy add-on stickers for extra coverage or signature. There is no published way to pay the difference to upgrade a prepaid item or rescue an overweight one, so if it does not fit, buy a regular label online instead. For how prepaid labels differ from prepaid packaging, see prepaid shipping labels in Canada.

Getting the parcel to Canada Post

Drop it at any post office or, if it fits, in a street letter box—the slot takes parcels up to 28 × 21.5 × 14 cm or 36 × 19 × 11 cm (Priority cannot go in a letter box). Personal customers in some areas can book a home pickup in the Canada Post app: up to three items, each up to 22.7 kg, weekdays 9:00–17:00, at $3.50 per pickup.

Businesses get more: on-demand pickup is a flat $3.50 per pickup with no limit on the number of packages, and free for Priority shipments, bookable the same day before the cut-off or up to 90 days ahead with a Solutions for Small Business account. Regular pickups cost $7.50 a week for businesses spending $2,500–$14,999 a year and are free from $15,000, for businesses needing at least two pickups a week.

Hundreds of orders, more than one carrier

Canada Post’s own tools stop at 50 shipments per order unless you sign a contract and run EST Desktop 2.0—and every route above keeps you on one carrier. Sellers shipping hundreds of orders a week usually hit two walls at once: re-keying or re-uploading orders, and paying Canada Post rates on parcels that Purolator or another carrier would carry for less.

ShipCay imports your orders in one go by CSV or API, compares Canada Post with Purolator and other carriers on every parcel, batch-creates official labels at the lowest rate and merges them into a single PDF; tracking syncs back to your store automatically. Common questions

Can I buy a postage label online in Canada? Yes. Personal shippers use Ship Online with a free Canada Post account and a credit card; businesses use Snap Ship (free Solutions for Small Business membership) or, under contract, Shipping Manager and EST Desktop 2.0.

Is it cheaper to buy postage online than at the post office? For businesses, yes: Solutions for Small Business pricing is discounted against counter prices, and through December 31, 2026 every member gets the top tier. Canada Post’s personal pages do not advertise an online discount.

Can I buy postage online without a printer? Yes—buy the label in Ship Online and show the emailed receipt at a post office that offers label printing; Snap Ship users can scan a QR code and print at the counter.

How many labels can I create at once? Snap Ship and Shipping Manager take up to 50 shipments per order; EST Desktop 2.0 (contract customers only) imports files and batch-prints hundreds.

Can I add postage to a prepaid envelope or box? You can add coverage or signature stickers to prepaid envelopes, but there is no published way to pay a difference on prepaid packaging, and an overweight flat rate box will not be shipped.
